未来可以去哪里工作），教学侧重点（涵盖哪些学科领域的知识以及研究方法） - 各专业代表性项目介绍（包括优势，招生要求等） 1、公共管理/公共政策（MPA/MPP）等相关专业综述 - 说到社科方向的申请，很多人的反应就会想到 MPA/MPP，全称Master of Public Administration/Master of Public Policy，MPA/MPP 也是申请美国的社科类硕士项目中最热门的方向之一，在整个社科专业大类里，属于应用性较强的职业导向型项目，培养公共领域中的问题分析和问题解决能力。

- 涉及到公共领域 Public Affairs 的项目不止 MPA 和 MPP，还有他们的一系列兄弟姐妹，包括： Master of Public Administration (MPA)、Masterof Public Policy (MPP)、MA in Global Affairs、Master of Global Affairs (MGA)、Master Of International Affairs (MIA)、International MPA、Master of Arts in Public Management、Masterof Public Affairs (MPA)、Master in Policy Management (MPM)、Global MPP. 除此之外，还有 MPA-ID、MA-IDP、Master of International Development Policy (MIDP)、MPA In Development Practice 这类国际发展相关的项目（是不少国关专业同学的申请方向） 部分项目所涉及的学科领域也和国际关系(IR)、国际事务(IA)、国际发展(ID)等方向有一部分的重叠。

大部分项目时长2年左右，少部分1年。- Public Affairs 家族中，MPA/MPP 相对热门。这类专业跨学科属性非常强（政治、经济、金融、统计、政策、管理 etc），未来的就业方向非常广泛，去 public sectors 还是 private sectors 还是 nonprofit sectors 其实是不限的（包括金融、咨询、政府部门、国际组织、研究机构、NGO 等等）。招收的学生背景也非常多样，但与此同时，这也要求学生在申请中需要为自己做相应的储备，包括学术上和工作经验和经历上： 1）部分项目会需要 quantitative background，对经济、统计、数据分析相关的知识有要求。2）需要全职工作经验或较丰富的相关经历。

这里我们可以通过一些代表性项目来了解这类专业的要求和培养方向： 代表性院校/项目介绍 Tier 1: Harvard University, Kennedy Schoolof Government 哈佛肯尼迪政府学院；

Princeton, Woodrow Wilson Schoolof Public and International Affairs; UC Berkeley, Goldman School of Public Policy - 关键词：头部，其中哈佛、普林斯顿录取率非常低 Tier 2: University of Chicago; Columbia University; University of Pennsylvania; Duke University; NYU; JHU（开设相关专业最多）这一梯队的学校也是大部分学生申请的目标学校，同时这些学校开设的相关专业也比较多。举几个比较有名的项目作为例子。

MPA/MPP高专排代表（被学校综排拖累的优质项目）: - Syracuse University (雪城大学), Maxwell School, MPA（历史悠久since 1924，专排top，时长12-18个月） e.g. Our MPA program meets the growingneed to advance public policy, enhance public management, and bridge theprivate and public sectors. - 1）国际关系、政治学一类的项目和一些侧重于 public policy 的项目在研究领域上具有交集，尤其是美国学校的项目。不少相关专业背景，前往美国留学，未来方向为就业的学生会更倾向于选择 MPA/MPP 等更偏职业导向性的项目。2）除去 policy 研究相关的项目，political science 类的项目会更关注理论研究，因此学术导向性也会相应地更强一些。但由于学术导向的性质，相关领域的项目较多为博士项目，因此硕士项目相对有限（比如 Sociology，这里指比较狭义的社会学专业，是以 PhD 项目为主的，目前美国开设社会学硕士的高校很少，只有哥大、康奈尔等屈指可数的几所）。3）美国还是英国？MPA/MPP 类项目一般选择美国；

对研究 IR、Political Science 等方向希望未来往学术方向发展的申请者而言，英国的可选学校及高质量项目较多。4）分支：Political Science 下属方向包括：政治学、政治理论、比较政治学、政治思想史、政治经济学等等。IR 下属方向包括：国际关系、国际关系理论、国际政治、国际关系史等等。相关领域英国比较知名的几所学校还是牛津、剑桥、LSE 这几所。5）背景要求：学术型项目对专业匹配度要求较高。如英国的政治学、国际关系等项目偏好相关背景的学生，如政治、国关，或有相关性的经济学、历史学、法学、社会学、哲学等。跨学科项目更加 open，比如地区研究。适合国关、社会学、历史学、政治学、外国语以及商科等背景的学生申请。

同时，相比于 MPA/MPP 专业对申请者的职业背景要求较高，这一类项目对于申请者的要求则更多会集中在学术方面，语言成绩要求也会较高。6）也有一些比较特别的项目，对理工科有所侧重，比如 UChicago 的MS in Computational Analysis andPublic Policy (MSCAPP)，USC的InformationSecurity Policy & Management (MSISPM)等。关于地区研究： - 项目一般具有跨学科的属性，会涉及到的领域包括政治、经济、历史、社会、文化、国际关系等。地区研究类的项目，涉及到的地区主要有：东亚、欧洲、中东、非洲。

美国的地区研究作为学科领域主要始于二战后，处于当时的变化的国际环境之下，出于政治、外交等方面的一系列需求而建立，所以最初也服务于政治目的。东亚地区研究在这一小众领域中更为人所知一些，教学侧重点对于中国学生来说也会相对有优势。我本人研究生时期就读的项目也是东亚地区研究，所以我就以它为例做一个介绍。部分美国高校会开设不同的东亚研究专业，比如哥大，它们的区别在哪里？Columbia University 的两个东亚相关项目：MARSEA（Regional Studies East Asia）和EALAC（East Asian Languages and Cultures）。都是文理研究生院 GSAS 下属的项目，也是研究属性比较强的项目。

前者隶属于Weatherhead East Asian Institute，更灵活一些，一年，跨学科，侧重当代问题研究，该项目的学生会来自广义的社科、人文、以及商科等背景，也会有一些已有工作经验的人士，未来的选择方向包括继续学术深造、转专业深造、就业等等。后者隶属于 Department of East Asian Languages and Cultures 更关注语言、文学、文化、艺术等领域，准入门槛上对背景匹配性的要求会更高，发展方向上，学术导向性也会更强。录取者背景方面，以我当时所在项目 MARSEA 对华人学生的录取情况来看：大陆本科 2 名，分别来自北大和清华，港本 1 名，来自香港大学，此外还有美本2名；EALAC 项目录取的大陆本科学生也以人文背景为主。

当然还有一些学校的地区研究专业则是同时包含了人文+社科研究的属性，比如哈佛、斯坦福等。也有一些学校则直接开设 PhD 项目。

另外英国学校也会开设类似专业（但研究对象会是更广义的东方） 美国东亚研究硕士代表性项目（一般1-2年） - Harvard University, Master of Arts in Regional Studies–East Asia - Yale University, The Master of Arts Program in East Asian Studies - Columbia University, Master of Arts in Regional Studies–East Asia; Masterof Arts in East Asian Languages and Cultures - Stanford University, Master of Arts Program in East Asian Languagesand Cultures - Duke University, Master's Degree in East Asian Studies…… 3、新闻/传媒传播综述： 新传大类，我们会在把新闻学与传媒传播分开介绍。

- 前者申请要求相对更高，尤其对语言成绩，比如哥大新闻学院要求托福114 以上，雅思 8.0 以上；后者面向的范围则更广，更适合对相关领域感兴趣的大多数学生。- 申请国家选择上：Journalism 申请更多选择美国；传媒传播方向英美皆可。

美国 top 新闻学（Journalism）项目： - Harvard University, Master of Liberal Arts, Journalism - Columbia University, M.S. in Journalism; M.A. in Journalism; M.S. inData Journalism - Stanford University, Journalism M.A. - Northwestern University, Master of Science in Journalism - 此外还有WUSTL，UCBerkeley, USC, NYU等院校的新闻学专业也广受欢迎。

E.g. Columbia University 的三个新闻学专业，除了对申请者英语水平要求特别高以外，有什么区别？- M.S. in Journalism，该项目对学生专业背景要求上没有限制。

NYU新闻学院有多少项目？

- NYU新闻学院的相关项目可以算是美国高校里数量最多的，目前已知的包括： M.A. in Journalism: Business and Economic Reporting Cultural Reporting & Criticism Global & Joint Program Studies Literary Reportage Magazine and Digital Storytelling News and Documentary Reporting the Nation & New York Science, Health & Environmental Reporting Studio 20: Digital First…… - 这些专业对申请者的背景要求各不相同，总体而言，有新闻基础、有liberal arts 背景、有相应工作经验的申请者会更受偏好。

传媒传播类项目 Media/Communication - 传媒传播类项目相对于狭义的新闻学项目而言，对大部分申请者更友好一些，英美学校相关专业的选择也较多。介绍一个对申请者来说相对友好的藤校项目： - Columbia University, School of Professional Studies, MS in Strategic Communication, 藤校友好项目；实践性强；SPS是职业导向性强的学院，较多SPS的学生是已经工作了的人士；录取要求相对不那么严苛：GPA 3.0+, TOEFL 100+, IELTS 7+；

12-16months - 英国高校中，传媒传播类研究生专业相对较强，适合申请者选择的学校有UCL、LES、University of Edinburgh、KCL、University of Manchester、University of Warwick 等等。- 英国学校传媒传播类专业对申请学生的要求：GPA 均分达到85，至少80以上；雅思均分一般要达到7分（各项目对小分要求不同，但基本要求6.0/6.5+） - 一部分项目的研究领域会和文化研究、性别研究等方向有所交叉。4、教育/心理学/社会工作综述： - 教育也是社科类申请的一大方向。这里把教育、心理学、社会工作放在一起介绍一下，因为这几个方向在涉及的细分学科上也会有重叠的部分，作为某一专业的下属分支。比如教育心理学；
